Personal Documentation

Of Jamie Nicole Benwick from 12 ICT 1

Day 1: April 26, 2023

On the first day of the immersion, we were introduced to our lectors and had a brief orientation about what we will be doing for the entire program. We were informed that the majority of the days would be spent using traditional animation methods, and the last three days would be focused on digital animation techniques.

I was assigned to Ma'am Frances' class and felt excited to learn under her guidance. To kick off our first day, we were asked to showcase our skills in different categories such as drawing the female and male anatomy from different angles, creating dynamic characters, and designing our own original character.

I found this task to be challenging, as I had limited experience in traditional animation. However, with Ma'am Frances' expertise and guidance, I was able to learn various techniques and skills that helped me improve my drawing abilities. We spent the entire day working on these tasks, and by the end of the day, I was proud of what I had accomplished.

Throughout the day, I was impressed by the level of skill and creativity displayed by my fellow classmates. Each of us had a unique approach to the task at hand, and it was fascinating to see how our styles and techniques varied.

Overall, the first day of immersion was a great start to what was to be an exciting and challenging journey. I was looking forward to learning more about traditional and digital animation techniques and improving my skills further under the guidance of our skilled lectors.

Day 2: April 27, 2023

On day 2 of the immersion program, we continued our lessons in traditional animation. We were given copies to trace, and our lector taught us how to do the in-between, which is an essential process in traditional animation. The in-between is where the artist draws the frames between the key frames to create the illusion of motion.

To make the work easier and faster, we were given light boxes to use. This allowed us to see through the paper and trace the drawings accurately. Throughout the day, I was able to learn the difference between the rough draw and the final model. The rough draw is the first sketch, while the final model is the cleaned-up version of the drawing.

We were also taught about two types of in-between, the Western and the Japanese. The Western style is more realistic, while the Japanese style is more exaggerated and cartoony. Our lector also introduced us to quality lines, which are used to emphasize certain parts of the drawing and make them stand out.

After finishing our workload, we were instructed to conduct the line test. This is where each student's drawings are put together to create an animation sequence. It was exciting to see our drawings come to life on the screen.

Overall, day 2 was a productive day for me as I learned a lot about traditional animation and was able to apply what I learned through the line test.

Day 3: April 28, 2023

On the third day of my immersion, I was given a new task that involved a stack of papers with a bear drawing. My task for the day was to do both the clean up and the in between or IB for short for each drawing. I quickly realized that this task required a lot of time and effort. Most of my time was spent doing the in between, rough draw, and applying the quality line.

My lector had taught us the difference between the rough draw and the final model, and she introduced us to two types of in-between techniques - the western and the Japanese style. I found the process of creating the in-between frames to be challenging but fulfilling. It required a lot of precision and attention to detail, but seeing the animation come to life through each frame was a rewarding experience.

Throughout the day, I had to ensure that my output met the standards set by my lector. If my work was not up to the standards, I was asked to redo it until it met the expectations. This process of constantly refining and improving my work was a valuable learning experience for me. It taught me the importance of perseverance and dedication in achieving my goals.

Overall, day three was a challenging but productive day for me. It allowed me to hone my skills in animation and taught me the importance of striving for excellence in everything I do.

Day 4: May 2, 2023

As I entered day 4 of my animation immersion, I was excited to continue learning new techniques and skills in the field of animation. However, the day started off with a holiday as it was Labor Day, so we resumed the next day, Tuesday.

During the morning, we resumed our task from the previous week of doing the in between for the drawings that we had been given. Ma'am Frances asked us to finish our tasks and conduct the line test before moving on to tracing new papers. As I worked on my tasks, I learned to apply the quality line to my work and distinguish between the rough draw and final model. However, midway through my task, I started to feel unwell. I was experiencing a headache and nausea, making it difficult for me to concentrate.

Ma'am Frances noticed that I was not feeling well and advised me to rest for a while. She instructed me to take a nap and come back once I felt better. Despite my efforts, I was only able to finish cleaning up the stack of paper and was unable to find the IB or conduct the line test.

It was a bit disappointing not being able to finish my work, but I appreciated Ma'am Frances's concern for my well-being. I realized that taking care of myself is just as important as learning new skills and techniques in animation.

Day 5: May 3, 2023

On day 5, I was under Ma'am Frances, and we were tasked to continue doing the in between for the drawings we finished the day before. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend as I had fallen sick the day before. I had tried to continue attending, however, when I stood up, I immediately felt dizzy. My parents then decided that I should stay at home and rest for the day.

I was disappointed that I had to miss a day of class, but I knew it was for my own health and safety. I spent most of the day in bed, trying to get some rest. Later on, the fever I thought had passed came back, and I was stuck in bed the whole day. I felt frustrated and helpless, unable to do anything but wait for my body to recover.

Despite my absence, I was glad to hear that my classmates were able to continue their work on the in between. I knew that I would have to catch up quickly once I returned to class. I hoped that I would be able to recover soon so that I could get back to work and continue improving my skills.

Day 6: May 4, 2023

As I woke up on Day 6, I was relieved that I was feeling much better. I knew that I had to attend this day's class, even if I was still not at 100%. As soon as I arrived, we were given a few more copies to trace and were tasked once again to do the in-between. I used my lightbox to help me with the task, and I was able to do it faster than before.

After finishing our work, we were asked to conduct the line test, which is a significant step that signifies that we have finished the given activity and are ready to move on to the next. I was happy to have finished everything on time and was excited to learn that the next day, we would be having our mock test.

During the mock test, we would be applying everything we learned throughout the immersion, and I was excited to see how far I've come in just a few days. Before we left for the day, we were told that the following three days would be digital animation, which meant that we would be using software programs to create our animations.

As I went home, I felt both nervous and excited for the mock test and the upcoming days of digital animation. I knew that there were still so many things to learn, but I was grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself in this new experience and to discover the world of animation.

Day 7: May 5, 2023

Day 7 was a crucial day for us as it was our mock test for the traditional animation class. Our lectors gave us a stack of paper that we had to trace and draw the in between. The lectors reminded us that the in between is what they will grade. The mock test lasted only until noon and was similar to our ordinary class day. After lunch, we had a brief meeting about what we will do next week. We were dismissed early, and they asked us to list down our names under the time frame we wish to attend because each batch could only accommodate 17 students. We had two schedules to choose from, either from 8 am to 12 pm or from 1 pm to 4 pm. I felt a bit anxious about the limited slots as I wasn't sure which schedule would be best for me. Nonetheless, I made sure to sign up as soon as I could so that I could secure a slot.

Day 8: May 8, 2023

Day 8 began with unexpected news as I was informed by a fellow student from the morning class that our class was cancelled due to an accident that our lector, Ma'am Kat, had experienced. It was quite alarming to hear that she was rushed to the emergency room, and I hope that she is doing well.

Later on, I received another update from the same student that Genesis, another lector, would be conducting an online class for all students. The class started at 1 pm and lasted until 4 pm. During the online class, we discussed the basics of digital art, which was quite exciting for me as I have never really delved into that aspect of art before.

Ma’am Kat showed us a video named "The Tale Teller," which was an animated short film that showcased the power of storytelling through the use of digital art. The video was truly captivating, and I was in awe of how technology has advanced in the field of animation.

Overall, it was a productive day despite the unexpected turn of events. I hope that Ma'am Kat is doing well and that she will be able to recover soon.

Day 9: May 9, 2023

On day 9, our class resumed with face-to-face instruction, just like the morning and afternoon classes. This day marked a transition from traditional to digital animation. We were given a file of Kronks from the Emperor's Groove to work on, and our task was to clean up the drawings and find the in-between frames. Unfortunately, none of us were able to finish the task within the given time frame. We were told that our lector, Ma'am Frances, will be grading our output and we will be continuing our digital animation activities on the next day. Despite the difficulty of the task, I am determined to do better and learn more in the days to come.

Day 10: May 10, 2023

On the last day of our training, we continued working on the Kronks file in digital art. However, we were not able to finish everything due to time constraints. Our lectors, Ma'am Kat and Ma'am Frances, selected three students, including myself, Albano, and Laogan, for an interview. During the interview, they asked us about our experience during the training and how we felt about it.

Afterward, they asked us to fill up our application form to take the National Certificate test from TESDA. They also reminded us to bring the required picture and for those who were unable to pass it, they were asked to return and submit the picture to process the application form. However, the schedule for the exam was still unknown as they needed to coordinate with TESDA.
